The students have been learning a lot about non-fiction text and how to read for information. Every student should be able to locate and manipulate several non-fiction text features such as a table of contents, glossary, diagram, caption, etc.
We have also been working on retelling events of a story in sequence, to further our understanding of the text..
Most recently we have been learning about:
Topic- the subject
Main Idea- the message or messages the author wants you to know
Supporting details- the words from the text that help you form the main idea
At the beginning of the year we focused on making predictions before reading. We made our predictions by observing the the title, illustrations, and thinking about what we already know. As we read we confirmed or disproved our predictions. It was a fun learning experience and the children enjoyed sharing their explanations.
Recently, we discussed how stories compare and contrast with our own lives. We have also taken a look at cause and effect relationships. Ask your student to tell you the story of Charles the Tiger. What happened to Charles' roar? What happens at the end?
Phonics that we have been working on are short a, _at an, ap, and short i_ig, ip, it word families.
The sight words your student studies are specific to his or her needs. All students will have different sight words sent home at different times. Word flashcards or sentence strips will be sent home with your student periodically. Please help you child learn the words by having them talk to you about the words, and use them correctly when reading and writing.
